From the Telegraph to Radio: Impact on the American “Free Press”
Project:
My research paper for Dr. Hampf’s seminar Industrialization, Transportation, and Communication in the 19th Century will focus on the telegraph and the impact the technology had on other areas like business - advancing monopolization in general (Western Union) and, through private ownership of the medium, creating a monopoly on news through the AP (Associated Press).
It will then be compared to the radio and how this technology, through the help of the FRC (Federal Radio Commision), led to control of the medium by commercial broadcasters, impacting the venues of news delivery and - through corporate ownership - news content, thus, linking back to the AP.
Outline:
Very much a work in progress as of yet, but a preliminary structure/thesis here: telegraph-to-radio.pdf
